Flags lowered in honor of Madeleine Jana Korbel Albright

March 24, 2022

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who was the first woman in U.S. history to serve in the role, died March 23. She was 84.

After  becoming a U.S. citizen in 1957, Madeleine Albright went on to earn her bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. from Wellesley College and Columbia University, respectively. When she graduated from Columbia in 1976, she began working as a chief legislative assistant to former U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie.

Her remarkable career included serving on the National Security Council under President Jimmy Carter and serving as a U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. She was appointed the first female secretary of state by President Bill Clinton and served in that role from 1997 to 2001.

President Joe Biden said Madeleine Albright “inspired the next generation of public servants to follow her lead, including countless women leaders around the world.”

As a mark of solemn respect for Madeleine Albright,  President Biden has ordered all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset Sunday, March 27. Publix will lower flags at all support locations to half-staff.
