We commemorate and reflect upon Juneteenth

June 19, 2022

On June 19, 1865, 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news the Civil War was over and all slaves were freed. Today, we recognize June 19 as the anniversary of the day the last enslaved Americans learned of their freedom.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which officially made Juneteenth a federal holiday. Publix recognizes the importance of this day, and we celebrate this holiday as a time to gather and commemorate African American freedom.
