Publix remembers General Colin Powell

Oct. 18, 2021

General Colin Powell, who rose to the highest ranks of the United States military and served as both a presidential adviser and secretary of state, passed away this morning. President Joe Biden said he “repeatedly broke racial barriers, blazing a trail for others to follow, and was committed throughout his life to investing in the next generation of leadership.”

As a mark of solemn respect and to pay tribute to General Powell’s service to our nation, President Biden has ordered all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff through sunset Friday, Oct. 22. All Publix support locations will lower flags to half-staff.

Born in New York City and raised in Harlem and the South Bronx, Powell attended public school before joining the United States Army. From 1989 to 1993, he served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the government. He served as secretary of state under former President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. He was twice awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of General Powell and all who knew him.
